SUMMER IS COMING TO ULMARRA

Took a walk down Coldstream to the boat ramp this morning, lamenting the brownness of the water which is deterring me a little from swimming in the Clarence at Ulmarra. Took some shots of the yachts moored on the far bank. Yesterday at Wide River Music, two of the yachties who had sailed up from Tasmania, were telling us that they had come up the river because they had heard it on the grapevine that the Harwood Bridge was to be permanently prevented from opening and allowing tall masted vessels through. Get a grip, Councils etc! |
|
I have become reclusive again and haven’t been to the River for a while. I would prefer to live right on the river. Once, I lived in a boathouse in Urunga right on the Bellinger River and later in the Pilot House at the mouth of the Twin Rivers of Kalang and Bellingen but now I am 0.6km from any river at all. Saw two pedallers coming along from upriver and as they came in close recognised Edwina in a Hobie Cat. I have never seen one of these. They can be pedalled or paddled or sailed. Then, on alighting, just attach the wheels and they can be wheeled. Most impressed I am. |
I am even more impressed with the information that, within a few weeks, canoe and hobie hire will be opening from the back of Ulmarra Hotel. I haven’t written a lot about the Hotel or the other shops in the Village as yet – but I will. This Mighty River – THE Big River – which is still rather brown and a little intimidating for the Swimmer ( namely Me, This Swimmer) will then be accessible from your very own beer garden !!!!!! With the great meals and atmosphere. December 13 is the Social Clubs Xmas Party and the Droughtbreakers from Wide River are playing. 10-2 at the Cafe and then 4 onwards at the Pub. I LOVE VILLAGES !!!!!

PTOMAINE POISONING IN ULMARRA
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article1130793
The Courier Mail Monday 16 October 1933
ICE CREAM.
Ulmarra District.
PATRONS OF CHURCH FLOWER SHOW.
GRAFTON, October 15.
More than 50 persons, adults and children, suffered from ptomaine poisoning after eating ice cream at the Ulmarra Methodist flower show on Friday night. Some of the victims are still confined to bed Calls for medical aid came from all parts of the town and from the outlying districts of Deep Creek, Coldstream and Coldstream Road
Alan Fernance, night operator at the telephone exchange, was one of the victims but he stuck to his post.
One man attending the flower show ate ice cream and took some home to other members of the household with the result that before long all were in agony. It is thought that the poisoning may have resulted from a newly welded bottom in the ice cream container.

THE COMMERCIAL HOTEL ULMARRA 2009. BREKKIE AND LUNCH 7 DAYS A WEEK AND DINNER FRI-SAT NIGHTS. |

FROM THE CANBERRA TIMES. FRIDAY MAY 28 1937

ON THE MURDER TRAIL.
1937 saw the suspected murder of one ERNEST HARRY BROWN. Ernest Harry had at some time sold the lease of goodwill and the licence of the COMMERCIAL HOTEL, ULMARRA. Ernest was a plaintiff in a case before the Court in Sydney. Now the defendant was one, MARY MULLEN. Ernest Harry had taken out an injunction to stop MARY MULLEN from receiving any more money without his consent. This was in connection with the COMMERCIAL HOTEL SALE.
The intimation seems to be that Ernest Harry’s alleged murder was very convenient for someone involved in this dispute. I shall look for follow up articles. In May 1937, the suspect is ON THE RUN in a roadster which belonged to E.H. himself. The police had traced the man they desired to interview, to Sydney. What’s more, they had almost caught up with him. An Auburn Car had been tracked to a garage in Newtown but was driven away just before the police arrived.
The Auburn car had belonged to E.H at the time of his murder. It sounds a fine vehicle. The roadster had red stripes running from the radiator and a black hood. It was grey or light blue and had “either an old style NSW number plate or a Queensland plate.”
Said Roadster was reported as being seen in South Australia, and out near Broken Hill and yet again near Parkes.
WHO WAS DRIVING THIS ROADSTER?
WAS HE CONNECTED TO MARY MULLEN?
Hmmm!
